Carty Family Concert
The Carty family are delighted to headline this year’s Feile Strokestown Saturday eve concert on 12th October in the Percy French Hotel. This Roscommon family have been ambassadors of our native music spanning four generations. From country house dances to the world stages in venues such as the Sydney Opera House and London’s Royal Albert hall to festivals throughout Europe, USA, Canada, Australia and beyond. This concert will be led by John Carty, a former TG4 Gradam Ceoil musician of the year and recent Flanagan award recipient. He is joined by his son James on fiddle and his brother, also James on flute.
This musical lineage started in the parish of Ballinameen by Batty Carty in the early 1900s, who took it upon himself to learn music in his young years and eventually teach it to others in his locality. His music was handed down to his son, John P, who had a long and distinguished musical life particularly in London where the celebrated Irish music scene flourished during the 1960s. John P played all the major venues including the Galtymore Dance hall, the Royal Albert hall, Wembley stadium and also appeared on Dave Allen’s TV show. In turn, John P encouraged his own sons John and James who grew up in London to continue this rich heritage. Today the Carty name stands proudly as major contributors to the Irish traditional music. John, now living in the homestead in Ballinameen is known worldwide and both his brother and son are major contributors to the ever evolving London Irish music scene and each recorded artists in their own right.
The concert will explore their musical roots from north Connaught and draw from the rich and diverse repertoire they have nurtured. They will be joined on the night by long time collaborator Francis Gaffney from Boyle on guitar and Catherine McHugh from Galway on piano plus other guests. This will be a one-off concert not to be missed.
